Tan Zuoren

Pu defended Tan Zuoren, an activist who investigated the deaths of thousands of children in schools that collapsed in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, against charges of defaming the Communist Party in online posts regarding the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations. On the morning of Tan’s trial on August 12, 2008, the defense’s witnesses were woken by police in their hotel rooms, beaten, and prevented from going to the court. Tan was found guilty of subversion and in 2010 was sentenced to five years in prison. He was released in March 2014.
