Chinese Rights Lawyer Detained in 2014 Will Stand Trial

May 15, 2015 – One of China’s best-known human rights lawyers, Pu Zhiqiang, will stand trial in Beijing on charges of inciting ethnic hatred and picking quarrels, prosecutors said on Friday. Their announcement came just over a year after the police detained Mr. Pu, making him one of the most prominent targets of the Chinese Communist Party’s vigorous campaign against dissent.


Pu ZhiqiangPu Zhiqiang is a prominent civil rights lawyer in Beijing, well known internationally and in the mainstream Chinese media for his work in protecting free speech and abolishing labour camps in China, among other issues. He considers himself a moderate working within the legal system to defend the rights of individuals and bring about change in his native country he feels passionate about.  On May 6, 2014, Pu was detained by authorities after attending a private meeting in Beijing where he participated in a discussion about the upcoming 25th anniversary of the military crackdown on student-led protests in Tiananmen Square. On June 13, 2014, he was formally arrested for “creating a public disturbance”  and “illegally obtaining the personal information of citizens.” This website aims to provide the latest news, information and legal analyses of the case for “Lawyer Pu,” who now needs legal and public assistance because of the uncertain future he faces. It will also provide information on other rights lawyers who are detained or facing legal proceedings in China.


Pu’s Video Workshop Exposed Party Abuses

Before he was detained in May 2014, human rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang made a 36-minutes video exposing the plight of Xiao Yifei, a local Chinese Communist Party member who was held in detention for alleged corruption.  In the video interview, Xiao described how he was physically abused and was forced to admit to his “crimes,”  while in detention. The video, made by Pu Zhiqiang Workshop, has been circulating in China’s online media. It is posted with English subtitles.
The original title of the video Interview on “Ningyuan Shuanggui” in Hunan (湖南宁远双规访谈实录). “Shuanggui” (双规) refers to a form of internal CPC procedure imposed on party members who are suspected of corruption or “violations of party discipline”. Under “Shuanggui,” meaning literally “double stipulations,” the  accused is  required to report to party authorities at designated times and places for questioning.  Ningyuan (宁远) County is located in Yongzhou, Hunan, Southeast China.
